I am a working single mom. I left my marriage five years ago to escape my verbally and emotionally abusive husband. As much as I have tried, I can't escape him due to the requirements for joint custody of our two children. Years of nuisance legal complaints that caused me to miss work, pursuit through the legal system for child support enforcement, medical bills that have never been reimbursed have taken their toll. Despite working full time, I can't seem to get ahead. Pursuing a different job isn't an option due to my former spouses refusal to cooperate with any visitation changes to his schedule. I have had my vehicle repossessed, will be facing eviction, utilities are scheduled for cutoff tomorrow and they can't offer help because I can't pay anything today. My bank account is overdrawn. My gross income doesn't qualify for anything because it's not close enough to the poverty level, but if you take into consideration childcare, insurance and taxes-I bring home minimum wage. I would cry if I thought it would do any good. I am the face of the working poor.
